Why It Matters

Groundworks Done Right — Once

Underground drainage infrastructure is invisible once installed — which makes quality of workmanship impossible to verify after the event. Shortcuts taken during groundworks inevitably resurface: inadequate falls cause standing water, incorrect backfill leads to settlement, and non-compliant connections create problems at inspection or when properties change hands.

DrainCare Direct's groundworks division operates to the same standards on every job — regardless of size. Utility scanning before every dig. Structural backfill as standard. Full surface reinstatement to match the existing finish. Building Regulations compliance documented and signed off. These are not options — they are how we work.

From a single drainage connection for a house extension to a phased underground network replacement across a school campus, our civil engineering team brings the same rigour and accountability to every project we take on.

Our approach

Every groundworks project begins with a full site assessment — and where existing drainage is involved, a CCTV survey before any ground is broken. We do not guess at what is underground. We survey it, map it, and design around it.

New Drainage System Installations

Whether you are connecting a new residential extension, installing drainage for a commercial development or replacing an entire below-ground network, the quality of the installation determines the long-term performance of the system. DrainCare Direct designs and installs drainage systems that are built to last — compliant with Approved Document H and water authority adoption standards where applicable.

Every installation begins with a site assessment and, where existing drainage is present, a CCTV survey to confirm connection points and system condition. We design for correct falls, access requirements and connection compatibility before any ground is opened.

On completion, we backfill and compact to specification, carry out a CCTV sign-off of the installed pipework and provide as-built drainage records for your Building Control submission, insurance records or future reference.

Case Study Focus

Excavation & Underground Pipe Replacement

When CCTV survey identifies collapse, severe root intrusion or irreparable structural damage, excavation is the only route to a permanent fix. DrainCare Direct provides controlled excavation across all property types — hand-dug around utilities and foundations, mechanically assisted where access permits, and always within a clearly defined safe working zone.

We do not excavate blind. Every dig begins with a utility scan and a clear scope of the pipe runs to be accessed — informed by the CCTV condition report and any available drainage records. This approach eliminates the risk of accidental damage to live services and ensures the excavation footprint is kept to the minimum necessary.

Following replacement, we backfill in approved granular layers to prevent settlement, and fully reinstate the surface — whether that is a residential driveway, a commercial car park or a school playground — to match the original finish.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Groundworks Services

What groundworks services does DrainCare Direct provide?+
DrainCare Direct provides a full range of civil engineering and groundworks services including drainage system design and installation, controlled excavation, underground pipe replacement, inspection chamber and manhole construction, school drainage upgrade programmes and surface reinstatement. We work across residential, commercial, education and infrastructure sectors throughout London and the M25.
Do you check for underground utilities before excavating?+
Yes — without exception. Before any excavation begins, we carry out a full utility scanning and survey of the proposed dig area, identifying gas, water, electricity, telecoms and drainage services. This protects your property, our engineers and any third-party infrastructure. We also notify relevant statutory undertakers where required by the New Roads and Street Works Act.
What happens to my driveway or garden after excavation?+
Full surface reinstatement is included as standard in all of our groundworks projects. We compact and backfill with approved granular material before reinstating to match the existing surface — whether tarmac, block paving, concrete, resin-bound or grass. We do not consider a job complete until the site is returned to a clean, safe condition.
Are your drainage installations compliant with Building Regulations?+
Yes. All drainage installations are designed and installed in compliance with Approved Document H of the Building Regulations, and where applicable to water authority adoption standards. We provide completion certificates, as-built drainage records and any required sign-off documentation as standard on all new installations.
Can you carry out groundworks for new build extensions and developments?+
Yes. We regularly carry out drainage groundworks for residential extensions, new build developments and commercial construction projects. We work directly with homeowners, main contractors and project managers, and can coordinate sequencing with other trades. We provide all required documentation for Building Control sign-off.
How do you manage groundworks on occupied sites?+
Careful site planning is central to how we operate on occupied residential and commercial properties. We establish clearly defined and secured working areas, provide appropriate hoarding and dust control, maintain pedestrian access at all times where required, and follow daily clean-down protocols. Our project managers liaise with occupants throughout to minimise disruption.
Do you provide drainage system design as part of the installation?+
Yes. For new drainage installations, our team provides the full design and specification tailored to your site — taking into account falls, soil conditions, connection points, access requirements and Building Regulations compliance. This design service is included within our installation scope rather than charged separately.
